About this book

Single-stock futures — futures contracts on individual stocks — have been met with more fanfare than any other product ever to hit Wall Street. Single-stock futures are the most cash-efficient way to trade stocks. They simply cannot be matched for speed when positions need to be altered to match market direction. They also offer tremendous leverage. Rather than paying for stocks in full or the usual hefty 50% margin requirement, single-stock futures only require a modest 20% down, which means you could control $100,000 worth of stock for only $20,000.

The advantages of single-stock futures go beyond just leverage and efficiency. You are also able to trade narrow-based indices. Rather than buying, say, one semiconductor stock, you can buy a small group of semiconductor companies in one trade. You can even customize indices with single-stock futures. Want to change the Nasdaq 100 to the Nasdaq 99? It's now easy to do.

These revolutionary tools  provide countless benefits for those who understand them.

The Single-Stock Futures Revolution was designed to bring together all aspects of single-stock futures in an integrated, cohesive and complete framework. This essential book educates the novice and empowers the professional. The Single-Stock Futures Revolution:

  • Explains in easy-to-understand terms exactly what futures contracts are and how they work
  • Offers a thorough understanding of the risks and rewards of futures contracts
  • Provides detailed instructions on how to open an account and place an order
  • Shows you the different strategies available and how to make them work with your portfolio

Used with its companion workbook, you'll be able to practice all the methods, techniques and strategies before you actually start trading. The workbook features hundreds of questions and answers and dozens of charts to test your knowledge.

The Single-Stock Futures Revolution is an important tool that will help you master this exciting new investment instrument.

Book review by: Elizabeth Thompson

[SFO]If you have ever read - or attempted to read - books on the markets without a financial background, they can often leave you in the dark, buried under words and concepts you don't understand. If you're new to derivatives trading, The Single Stock Futures Revolution, however, will shed light on the concepts common to the derivatives business

Throughout his book, Johnson communicates in a colloquial manner. He devotes the first two chapters to a general description of futures: what they are, their function in the market and the leverage their users can command. Paralleling the similarities between futures and other types of transactions, such as CODs and layaways, Johnson successfully relates the concept of futures to the average reader. In doing so, he also mutes the negative connotation associated with these markets.

Johnson then focuses on the creation of single stock futures, how they are traded, their contract specifications and the like. He has loaded the chapters with numerous examples, both of single stock futures trades and other types of futures trades, giving readers a range of trading scenarios over which to pore. Following the more general examples, he then explains single stock futures pricing - how to calculate it and how to understand the calculations - and reading quotes correctly, so that the new investors can be sure to get the right price for their trade.

The next couple of chapters are probably the most useful because they explain the actions investors will have to take once they have opened a futures account. First, in the same everyday language as previous chapters, Johnson reviews how to place multiple types of orders, such as market, stop and stop limit orders, as well as when to use each type of order. He then explains trading strategies, including everything from basic long and short positions to relative strength investing. Finally, he describes options and how one can use the options market to exit a futures position.

Although other books on single stock futures have covered similar material, Johnson sets his book apart with quizzes after each chapter and a supplemental workbook. The quizzes reinforce concepts and strategies in his book, making it all the more useful to potential traders, giving them an opportunity to truly absorb what's been written.

However, if you are a seasoned derivatives investor, this book probably will not teach you anything new. While the book is easy to understand, the downside is that it's pretty elementary for someone already familiar with the industry. And, unfortunately, Johnson has omitted technical and fundamental analysis, which often are paramount to any trading plan. Instead, this book acts as a springboard for beginners to learn more. Additionally, traders who are used to books being more moderately priced might flinch a bit as they see the price tag for this two-book set ($198.00). Our suggestion is to visit their website - www.21stcenturyoptions.com - to cut the price in half (at least, for a limited time).
